Taking Jaś to his first Windsurfing World Cup in Spain

Taking Jaś to his first Windsurfing World Cup in Spain

This week I was really excited to take our little man Jaś to his first ever PWA World Cup. He’s just under 12 weeks old now, and he isn’t going to remember any of this event, but I think it will be something special for him to look at in years to come – photos of him on the beach during the event and also on the official PWA World Tour website! This particular event in Costa Brava, Spain was the 3rd leg of the Slalom World Tour in 2017 and my first pro event of the season as I had missed the opening events in Asia. To get there, Agata, Jaś and I flew with my sister (who was visiting us in Warsaw) to Madrid for a couple of days of sightseeing, before Agata and I rented a car and drove 8 hours down to Costa Brava in the south-eastern coast of Spain close to the French border.

Costa Brava is known as a lightwind venue on the World Tour and boasts some very beautiful sandy beaches. It’s probably the ideal location to bring the family as the event is run out of a famous campsite with the whole tour staying in their new bungalows right on the waterfront; it’s a little bit more of a “community” feel event then our typical setups where every rider is staying in a different hotel. As a result, quite a few pro riders who are now parents bring their little ones to the beach. It was the first time for us to take the little guy to an event, but we had an absolute blast and so did he!

To make this trip possible we needed a few extra items packed. Firstly, our Cybex Priam pram has a gondola but it was a little too big for the flight so we opted to just bring our Cybex CloudQ car seat which attaches to the pram in one click. Airlines are happy to take car seats actually so that made life easier meaning we only needed to bring one pram attachment for manage both the car trips and walking around. We also took an inflatable bath and a very lightweight foldout beach tent we found at Decathlon. That’s it. Aside from the usual baby stuff. With just those 3 extra items life is easy; the bath inflates in less than a minute and our pram handles the sand really easily with it’s big back wheels so we brought the pram to the beach every day!

The event was a success; we had wind almost every day and Dad was very happy with his result (48th overall). Polish Mother’s Day arrived halfway through the event on thankfully a day with no wind in the morning so I was able to suprise Agata with a sneaky breakfast in a waterfront restaurant in L’Escala about 15 mins drive up the road. Jasiek spent his time in the tent with Agata while I would race – our races are only 4 minutes long so I have quite a bit of downtime on the beach waiting between heats so it was actually great having the whole family chilling in the tent watching. Jasiek loved every minute of it; and he was so tired by the end of the day he slept soundly each night – very nice combo! I can’t wait to take him to the next events and different parts of the world.
